Kathy Wood

Contemporary Realist

The subject is light — in a face, a landscape, a sunset. Anything, really. And whatever is moving through it: wind, snow, weather, a season turning, a smile.

Movement

Action in space and time

“I like motion, action, energy in my paintings. The sense of light, or wind — the elements of the outdoors, the elements of the atmosphere within the space.

Whether it’s the wind that’s moving, or season, or the light, or the snow, or the weather, or a smile, or a hug. I like capturing action in space and time.”

Kathy Wood

Not, she is careful to say, in the brushwork. That can be very refined. The movement is in the moment she picks and how the picture is built around it — the brushwork is in refining the important parts.

In the Studio

Seven days of one painting

The Shepherd Girl began as a figure floating on a bare ground and ended, six days later, on a stone wall above the sea. The model was real; everything around her was invented. Somewhere in the middle a cow was painted out and two lambs took its place.

About the Artist

Somewhere you
can fix things

“Life is nothing but problems, honestly. Art allows me to fix problems. And the process is completely timeless. There’s no time.”
